How to Get Housing Assistance 

Getting housing assistance requires navigating specific systems and resources. Follow these steps to connect with the right programs: 

Step 1: Assess and Document Your Situation 

Start by gathering key documents: proof of income, identification, and any records of your housing history (like leases or eviction notices). This information helps agencies evaluate your needs. If you’re in of resources, contact 211 Arizona. This free, confidential service connects you to local resources for housing assistance, food, and utilities. Write down your situation — whether you’re facing eviction, homelessness, or struggling with rent — to clearly communicate your needs to service providers. 

Step 2: Enter the Coordinated Entry System 

The coordinated entry system is Arizona’s primary gateway for housing assistance if you’re experiencing or at risk of homelessness. This system assesses your needs and connects you to shelters, transitional housing, or permanent solutions.  

Arizona has three main Continuum of Care, each serving different regions: 

1. Maricopa Regional Continuum of Care: Serving Maricopa County, this program offers shelter and housing assistance. Contact them at azmag.gov if you’re in the Phoenix metro area. 
2. Tucson Pima Collaboration to End Homelessness: For Pima County residents, access services through. They provide tailored housing assistance solutions. 
3. Arizona Balance of State Continuum of Care: Covering rural Arizona, this program supports those outside major cities. 

If you’re currently experiencing homelessness, reach out to the appropriate coordinated entry point immediately. These systems prioritize those in greatest need, but waitlists may apply, so patience is key. 

Step 3: Explore Specialized Housing Assistance Programs 

Certain programs target specific groups. If you’re an AHCCCS member, you may qualify for rental assistance through the AHCCCS Housing Program (AHP). Referrals for AHP come exclusively through clinical providers or care teams, so contact your healthcare provider to discuss eligibility. This program supports Arizonans with health-related needs, offering housing assistance to promote stability. 

For broader options, the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program provides federal rental assistance. Operated by local Public Housing Authorities (PHAs), Section 8 helps cover rent for low-income households. Some PHAs also manage conventional public housing. Check the list of Arizona PHAs for contact details and application processes. Note that Section 8 waitlists can be long, so apply early and explore other options simultaneously. 

Step 4: Connect with Behavioral Health Systems 

If you’re receiving behavioral health services, you may qualify for housing assistance through specialized waiting lists. Contact your behavioral health provider to discuss options. These programs often integrate housing with mental health or substance use support, offering a holistic approach. However, it’s important to know: We do not accept applications for housing assistance directly at HOM. Instead, we work behind the scenes to ensure programs run smoothly, connecting people to housing through established systems.
