A Cultivated Culture of Mental Wellness in the Workplace

May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues and promoting mental wellness. In today’s fast-paced world, where work often dominates a significant portion of our lives, prioritizing mental health in the workplace is essential.
The work environment plays a crucial role in shaping employees’ mental health. A supportive and inclusive work culture fosters a sense of belonging and reduces stress levels among employees. Companies that emphasize mental wellness not only create a healthier workforce but also enhance productivity and overall job satisfaction.

HOM takes a holistic approach to employee mental wellness, focusing on a multitude of factors that support our team members’ overall wellbeing such as:

  • In office perks like
    • monthly chair massages,
    • self-help-focused Lunch & Learns, and
    • monthly Culture Committee events.
  • Work-life balance including
    • generous amounts of paid-time-off,
    • over 12 paid holidays per year, and
    • 8 hours per month paid volunteer time.

Our comprehensive benefits package includes resources specifically aimed at mental health. For example, our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provides confidential counseling and support services to employees facing personal or work-related challenges. Also included free of charge to all employees is the Direct2Care program that provides unlimited free virtual health visits and 20 virtual mental health visits per year, including counseling and psychiatric sessions. This ensures our team members have easy access to professional help if needed.

Offering opportunities for participating in self-help topics during quarterly Lunch & Learns empowers team members with the knowledge and skills to manage stress effectively. Sessions have covered a range of topics, including mindfulness techniques, stress management strategies, and tips for combating the difficulties of change both in the workplace and at home.

We’ve cultivated a positive company culture that values employee well-being and promotes mental wellness in the workplace. Our HOM Culture Committee plays a significant role in fostering a sense of community and belonging among employees. Just in the past year Culture Committee sponsored events have included an off-site team-building activity, annual March Madness Cornhole Tournament, and monthly social gatherings aimed at reducing stress and promoting camaraderie.

HOM upholds a supportive atmosphere by removing the stigma surrounding discussions on mental health. By encouraging open dialogue team members freely share their mental health concerns with supervisors and colleagues, without apprehension of criticism or consequences. Providing ongoing resources for mental health education helps us break down barriers and encourages employees to seek help when needed.

By investing in employee well-being and implementing initiatives that support mental wellness, we have created a healthier, happier, and more productive team. During Mental Health Awareness Month, and every month, we remain committed to maintaining a workplace where employees feel valued, supported, and able to prioritize their mental health.
