Most participants in Maricopa County’s ABC Housing Programs will see all alphabet letters with multiple specialists, while Special Housing Programs may have one specialist for the entire program.

How Your HOM Housing Specialist Can Help You

A HOM Housing Specialist helps individuals and families transition from homelessness to stable housing. They manage supportive housing programs, guiding participants through every phase, including enrollment, move-in, ongoing support, annual certifications, program transitions, and, if needed, program termination. Their work ensures housing is accessible and sustainable, aligning with HOM’s mission to build stronger, healthier communities.

HOM Housing Specialists are your primary point of contact, offering comprehensive support to secure and maintain stable housing. They begin by conducting orientations and interviews to confirm your eligibility and explain program details, such as those for Section 8 or local initiatives. These sessions are designed to clarify expectations, answer your questions, and build trust, setting a strong foundation for your housing journey.

Once you’re enrolled, your housing specialist provides hands-on assistance, including helping you search for housing using tools like Padmission, an online platform for finding available rentals. They also manage critical tasks like processing Requests for Tenancy Approval (RFTA) and ensuring a unit’s rent meets program standards. Additionally, they calculate your rent contribution (total tenant payment) and Housing Assistance Payments (HAP) based on your income, assets, and expenses, ensuring accuracy to protect your financial stability and program compliance.

As advocates, housing specialists address challenges like late rent, lease disputes, or notices, using clear and empathetic communication to resolve issues. They maintain regular contact through phone calls, emails, or in-person meetings, creating a supportive environment that empowers you to thrive in your new home. Finding your housing specialist ensures you have a dedicated ally to guide you through every step of the process.

Collaboration with Service Providers

HOM Housing Specialists work within a network of service providers, including case managers, clinical teams, and supportive service organizations, to deliver holistic support. They participate in case conference meetings, collaborating with these partners to address housing stability and personal needs. For example, if you face challenges with lease compliance or other concerns, your housing specialist works with case managers to create tailored strategies for long-term success.

They also partner with the HOM inspections team to ensure rental units meet safety and quality requirements, as well as housing location assistance teams to find suitable homes for participants with complex needs. This collaborative approach ensures that your housing specialist connects you to a broader ecosystem of support, addressing not only housing but also related needs like mental health, employment, or education.
